You can tell if a CeraVe cleanser or moisturizer is fake before you even open it. The fake ones have clear signs on the bottle itself, so a quick check saves you from using a copy product on your skin.
These checks work for almost all CeraVe cleansers and for many of the pump-style CeraVe moisturizers, not just one product. So whether you have the Foaming Cleanser, Hydrating Cleanser, SA Cleanser, or a CeraVe moisturizing lotion, the same signs apply.
The fastest checks:
- Squeeze the bottle. Original CeraVe bottles are soft and squeeze easily. Fakes feel hard and stiff.
- Look at the shape. Originals look full and rounded. Fakes often look flat or sunken on the sides.
- Test the pump. A fake pump usually spins around in full circles. An original pump locks in place when closed.
- Check for the spring. Open the pump and look inside. Most originals have a clear, visible spring. Fakes usually have no spring at all.
- Do not trust barcodes alone. Fakes copy the same barcodes and batch codes as originals, so codes prove nothing on their own.
1. Squeeze the bottle (the easiest test)
This is the fastest way to spot a fake CeraVe, and you can do it in the shop before you buy.
Original CeraVe bottles are soft. When you squeeze one, it presses in easily. Fake bottles are made from harder, stiffer plastic, so they feel firm and do not give when you press them.
Because the original plastic is soft, the bottle also looks full and rounded, as the product pushes the walls outward. Fake bottles often look flat or slightly sunken on the sides because the hard plastic does not flex.
So before anything else, just pick up the bottle and press it, especially on the sides where the difference is easiest to feel. Soft and full means it is likely original. Hard and flat is a warning sign.

2. Test the pump (it should not spin freely)
Most CeraVe cleansers and moisturizers come with a pump, and the pump is another easy way to check.
On an original bottle, the pump locks in place. When you turn it to close, it stops firmly and does not keep spinning. When you turn it to open, it clicks into the open position.
On a fake bottle, the pump usually keeps spinning in full circles. It does not lock or stop cleanly. You can turn it round and round without it fixing in one position.
So hold the bottle and turn the pump. If it spins around without stopping, that is a strong sign the product is fake.
3. Open the pump and check for the spring
This check explains why a fake pump spins the way it does.
Unscrew the pump and pull it out of the bottle. On an original CeraVe, you will usually see a clear metal spring inside the pump. That spring is what makes the pump lock and work properly.
On most fakes, that spring is missing. Without it, the pump has nothing to hold it in place, which is why it just spins around in circles.
Keep in mind that on some originals the spring is not easy to see. It may be small or sitting deeper inside, so it can be hard to spot. If you cannot see a spring, do not judge by that alone. Go back to the pump lock test and the other checks in this guide.
So if you can, open the pump and look inside. A visible spring points to an original. If there is clearly no spring at all, treat it as a warning sign, but always read it together with the other checks.
Do not trust barcodes or batch codes alone
A lot of people try to check if CeraVe is original by scanning the barcode or looking up the batch code. This does not work.
The fakes we have checked copy the same barcodes and batch codes as the original bottles. So when you scan them, they can look correct even though the product is fake. The code alone proves nothing.
This is why the packaging checks above matter more. The squeeze test, the pump, and the spring are much harder for a fake to copy than a printed code. Trust how the bottle feels and how the pump works, not just the numbers on the label.
A note on retailer stickers and covered barcodes
Sometimes an original CeraVe bottle comes with an extra sticker on it, like a Walgreens store sticker, and sometimes the barcode is partly covered or hidden. This is completely normal and does not mean the product is fake. These stickers are added by the retail stores abroad, such as Walgreens, where the product was sold, not by CeraVe itself.
In fact, fake products almost never bother with these retail stickers. So if you see one, it is usually a good sign, not a bad one.
At the same time, many original CeraVe cleansers and moisturizers come with no sticker at all and a clear, visible barcode. That is also completely fine.
The point is simple: do not get confused either way. A store sticker or a covered barcode on an original is normal, and a clean bottle with a visible barcode is normal too. Judge the product by the packaging checks above, not by these small things.
How to avoid fake CeraVe when you buy
This part is easy once you know the checks above.
If you are buying from a physical store or pharmacy, hold the product in your hand before you pay. Do the squeeze test, check the pump, and look for the spring. If it passes, buy it. If it feels hard or the pump spins freely, leave it.
If you are ordering online and you are not sure about the seller, ask for cash on delivery and tell them you want to open the box and check the product before paying the rider. When it arrives, hold the bottle and apply the same checks. If it is original, keep it and pay. If it looks fake, return it on the spot without paying.
Either way, the rule is the same. Check the product with your own hands first, then pay. A few seconds of checking saves you from wasting money on a fake.
