La Roche-Posay is one of the most faked sunscreen brands in Pakistan right now. The Anthelios invisible fluid is so popular that the market is full of copies, and most of them are made well enough to fool a normal buyer.
The problem is that almost every “tip” people share online does not actually work. You have probably read that you should scan the barcode, check the QR code, or look at the expiry date. We have tested close to 50 fake bottles ourselves, and we can tell you honestly that these checks fail, the fakes copy all of them.
The good news is that there is one test that fakes cannot copy, and you can do it in seconds with the bottle in your hand. This guide will show you exactly what to feel for, with real photos of original and fake bottles side by side.
One quick note before we start. This guide is only about the La Roche-Posay sunscreens that come in the flat invisible-fluid bottle shown in our photos, which has around 5 to 7 variants, like the tinted, oil control, and all skin types versions. It does not cover their other sunscreens that come in tubes or pumps. We will explain those other sunscreens in another guide.
Also, this is a physical test of the bottle itself, something you can do before buying, even before opening the product. We are not talking about the texture, feel, or smell of the sunscreen inside. You are only checking how the bottle presses in your hand, so you can spot a fake without opening or using it.
Look at the two products in the photo below. One is 100% original, and the other is a fake.
Can you tell which one is real? Take a proper look at the boxes and the bottles. The logo, the colours, the printing, the shape, everything looks exactly the same.
The truth is, you cannot tell them apart just by looking, and neither can most sellers. In fact, even we deal with these products every day, and we still could not spot the fake by eye, we had to physically check the bottle to be sure.
So if anyone tells you to spot a fake by looking at the box or the label, forget it. The copies today are so good that your eyes will fool you. This is exactly why you need a real test, one that does not care how the bottle looks. That test is next.
The One Test That Actually Works: Press the Bottle
The original La Roche-Posay bottle is soft and flexible. The fake is hard and stiff. This is the one difference a copy cannot hide, and once you feel it, you will always know. Take the bottle in your hand and press it the way we show below.
Press near the edges with both thumbs
Hold the bottle in both hands and press near the edges with your thumbs, the edge opposite the cap, just like in the photo. On the original, the edges move outward slightly, like a hard chewing gum, when you apply a little pressure. You can clearly see it happening in the picture. The middle of the bottle is soft too, but the edges are where you notice the difference most easily, so that is the best place to check.
Press the top corner
Now press near the top corner with a little pressure. On the original, the corner gives softly and the plastic pushes out, then springs back when you let go. This soft, springy movement is the sign of a real bottle.
Press the bottom corner
Do the same near the bottom corner. Press with slight pressure and watch the edge push outward, just like the top. The original bottle flexes at the corners because the plastic is thin and soft, not hard and solid.
Now Do the Same Test on a Fake
A fake bottle looks exactly the same, but it behaves very differently the moment you press it. Here is what a copy does when we run the same test on it.
Pressing near the edges with both thumbs
When we hold a copy in both hands and press near the edges, nothing moves. The edges stay flat and stiff, even when we press harder. The plastic feels hard and solid, not soft like the original.
Pressing the top corner
When we press the top corner, the corner does not push out. Even with more pressure, the edge will not move the way a real one does. It simply stays hard.
Pressing the bottom corner
It is the same at the bottom corner. The edge stays firm and flat. No matter how much pressure is applied, the copy does not flex or spring out like the original does.
So when you do this test at home and the bottle feels hard, the edges stay flat, and nothing pushes out even with more pressure, that is a strong sign you are holding a copy. The original always feels soft and its edges move out.
Do Not Trust Barcodes, QR Codes, or Expiry Dates
This is the most important point in this guide. Almost everyone online will tell you to scan the barcode, scan the QR code, or check the expiry date to know if a product is real. We have tested many fake bottles ourselves, and we can tell you honestly that these checks do not work.
Barcodes and QR codes
Most people believe that if they scan the code and it takes them to the official La Roche-Posay website, the product must be real. This is completely wrong. When we scanned the fake bottles, many of them opened the same official La Roche-Posay pages as the original, because the counterfeiters simply print the same code on the copy. A fake can send you straight to the official website too. So a code that scans correctly proves nothing.
Batch codes
Batch codes are just as easy to copy. The fake makers print the same batch numbers on their bottles, so checking a batch code will not tell you anything either.
Expiry dates
Many people think a fake will have a missing or strange expiry date. Not true. The fakes we tested had proper printed expiry dates, exactly like the originals. So the expiry date cannot separate a real one from a copy.
Remember this simple truth. A fake can copy the barcode, the QR code, the batch number, the expiry date, the label, and the box. That is why, for every product, we look for the real unique points that truly separate an original from a copy.
If the Price Looks Too Good, It Is a Fake
Price is one of the easiest early warnings. Original La Roche-Posay sunscreen is an imported product, so it is never cheap. In Pakistan the genuine ones usually start from around 5000 rupees and go higher, depending on the variant.
So if someone is offering you this sunscreen for 2000 or 3000 rupees, you can be almost certain it is a fake. Nobody sells the original this far below its real cost. A price that looks too good to be true always has a reason behind it, and with this product, that reason is usually a copy.
But remember, this works only one way. A very low price is a clear sign of a fake, yet a high price does not prove a product is real. Some sellers charge full price for a fake to make it look genuine. So price can warn you about a cheap copy, but it can never confirm an original. For that, you still have to do the bottle test we explained above.

If you are buying from a physical store
Pick up the bottle and press it right there at the counter, near the edges and corners, the way we showed above. In ten seconds you will know if it is soft like an original or hard like a copy. If it feels hard and stiff, do not buy it. Test before you pay.
If you are buying online with cash on delivery
This is where many people get scammed, but you still have ways to protect yourself. When you order, ask the seller if you are allowed to open the parcel and check the product before paying the rider. Some sellers allow this, and some do not, because these are expensive products and a few people misuse open-parcel returns, so it is fair either way.
If the seller does allow it, open the parcel when it arrives and do the press test in front of the rider. If the bottle is soft and passes, keep it and pay. If it feels hard and fails, you can return it on the spot.
